The Challenge Coin Tradition

Challenge coins have become extremely popular among coin collectors in the recent years… and they aren't just for the military anymore either. Challenge coins are becoming more popular among associations outside the military and fandom such as animal-lovers, sports enthusiasts, and more.

Challenge coins got their name because they were used in the military to ensure that members were always carrying their units coin on them. The "challenge," which can be made at any time, would begin with someone taking out his or her coin and loudly placing the coin on the table or bar to grab everyone's attention. Everyone then had to immediately show their coin and anyone failing to do so must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and everyone else who has their challenge coin on them. However, if everyone has their coin, it is on the challenger to buy a round of drinks for the group. There are a variety of different rules and many variations of the game but generally, the challenge are to have your coin on you at all times.

While challenge coins were used for challenges at one point in time, they were also used as rewards to for great service. They are now considered affordable collectables, ranging from a few dollars to a couple hundred dollars for more rare coins. Collectors strive for the rarest coins and are considered to be a fun hobby for anyone because of the affordability and novelty of acquiring a piece of history and keeping it alive.
